Here are a few pictures of the AFV Club kit. You get plenty of nice detail with this one, including a full interior. The plastic is very brittle and I've been cutting the parts from the sprue with a a razor saw to keep them from breaking. This has slowed the build down somewhat. I have the interior built up enough for the painting stage. I will do the same for the upper half of the interior, and the clamshell back doors. Once they're all painted, I'll glue them together and then build up the exterior.

Any tips or advice on what I should expect with the rest of the kit?
And you should do a third. There is no end of options with the 251.

Do either of you guys see any need for photo-etch, etc? I have a couple of these in my stash, and if I listen carefully, I can hear faintly, "Build me...build me!"

hmmm... tips... i believe i broke the mp 40s it came with they were brittle as you said so be careful i actually bought 2 tamiya ausf d's and switched the tracks cause i like the model c better and wanted the better tracks on those i made one into a hybrid funkwagen (using a tamiya 250 antenna) doubt this vehicle existed but my logic was it was afrika and one might scrounge to make anything as for photo etch? i think the exterior tools and antennas were ok but perhaps for the interior maybe all depends on ow detailed you want to get

I didn't find anything on the kit that screams for PE (I'm looking at you Tamiya 8-Rad ). A few small clasp details could probably be made with wine bottle foil and wire, but I suppose it depends entirely on how much detail you want. What you get OOB is nicer than what you get from Tamiya's 251 D.

A bit more work. I primed the interior in black and then sprayed on a few misty coats of Tamiya dark gray mixed with a few drops of blue. This was then lightly dry brushed with a brew of Prussian blue, lamp black, and titanium white oils. Once that dried I gave it all a heavy wash/filter of burnt umber, with a more localized wash of black mixed with black umber. I'm currently in the process of painting the small details.

yes wow! nice detailing inside! makes me want to build another any hints on the camo or theater? or its a surprise? Thanks Calum and Kyle. I'm not sure about the camp and theater yet. It will be overall gray though. The instruction cover has one with light colored (looks like mud) crosshatching, but its not shown elsewhere. If I could find more info on that vehicle I would like to give it a go

I did something a little bit out-of-character for me. I painted the undercarriage before finishing all of the assembly. Typically I put the whole model together and then paint. But in the interest of acquiring more detail I did it the other way. I pretty much just painted the lower 1/3rd of the model and the wheels. Then I applied the first coat of dried mud onto the hull (the wheels will be weathered at the end. The mud is a mixture of water, dish-soap, copious amounts of white glue, and some shavings from pastels purchased at an art store (they cost a fraction of what the brand name stuff runs for; work just as well; and you have a myriad of color options). Anyhow, I mixed up a slurry, and then with an old brush I dabbed, stippled, flicked and flung it on. The mixture dries rock-hard and is amenable to fairly vigorous handling.

I got the base coats on over the last few days. I began with a black primer then sprayed on progressively lighter shades of blue-gray. I mixed Tamiya dark gray with blue and sprayed the shadow areas. Then I added some white for all the side panels. Then I added more white for the upper bits. It isn't quite the fancy Spanish color modulation, but it is certainly inspired by it. I'm not sure if the contrast between interior and exterior is too great now. I certainly don't like what has happened to the track! ....lousy rubber bands. To be honest I'm not sure what do do next with this method. Maybe a satin coat and then apply decals? Some kind of sandy colored filter? Ideas?

yep... hate the rubber tracks (i have a bandai maultier i never finished cause of the stupid things) looks great otherwise! love the color (and shading) i see the grenadiers having been wiping their boots upon entering what youve described would be a nice way to finish it

and with a few filters and washes and stuff. Wash was a mix of Prussian blue and Raw umber. I also added a filter of Naples yellow. The pre and post decal clear coats kind of subdued it, so I may add a bit more. Naples yellow and maybe a few spots of raw sienna.
